Product Highlight: Woodwick Candle Wicks

Wooden wicks can be a fantastic alternative to traditional cotton candle wicks. One of the advantages of using a wooden wick is that common problems with cotton wicks (such as mushrooming) are not applicable to wooden wicks. Another benefit of wooden wick candles is that since wooden wicks are rigid they require no support from a wick centering tool. This means that set-up is super simple, requiring only setting them in the wick sustainer and placing them in the container with a glue dot. Candles made with a natural wood wick are enhanced with the soothing fragrance of burning wood combined with the crackling sound of a wood fire.

In the Lumetique Original Woodwick range, we offer a total of fifteen sizes. This is broken down into five sizes in three different ranges. Each pack contains a total of ten wicks and ten sustainers. All our Wooden Wicks are 128mm long and therefore additional wooden wick sustainers are available on our website for customers who wish to make two smaller candles using the same wick. We also offer a sample pack in all three ranges – which is very useful for wick testing.

Lumetique Original Woodwick 0.508

The smallest range which we offer is the Lumetique Original Woodwick 0.508 range. The thickness of this wick is 0.508mm, and within this size there is five widths available: 6.35mm, 9.525mm, 12.7mm, 15.875mm, and 19.05mm. This is the range we would recommend testing if you are using a paraffin candle wax such as the Chandler Grey Pro Container wax.

Lumetique Original Woodwick 0.762

The intermediate range which we offer is the Lumetique Original Woodwick 0.762 range. The thickness of this wick is 0.762mm, and within this size there is five widths available: 6.35mm, 9.525mm, 12.7mm, 15.875mm, and 19.05mm. This is the range which we would recommend testing if you are using a vegetable or paraffin blend. This is also the wick series we would recommend testing for a paraffin wax with a high melt point – where the 0.508 range may be too small.

Lumetique Original Woodwick 1.016

The largest range which we offer is the Lumetique Original Woodwick 1.016 range. The thickness of this wick is 1.016mm, and within this size there is five widths available: 6.35mm, 9.525mm, 12.7mm, 15.875mm, and 19.05mm. This is the range we would recommend testing if you are using a natural wax or if you are using a high fragrance load. You may find that in some cases you need two wicks placed together in the same sustainer.

FAQs:

Q: What are the wooden wicks made from?
A: The Lumetique Original Woodwick is made from US native, sappy fruit trees and are naturally processed and sourced from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified mills and manufactured with pride and skill in the USA

Q: How sustainable are the wooden wicks?
A: Alongside being sourced from FSC certified mills, the exclusive manufacturer also donates a portion of its revenue to ‘Trees for the Future’ which is a charity organization that provides families with food, income, empowerment, unity, leadership, education, and even saves lives by planting and nurturing trees across the world. To date, the manufacturer has planted over 50,000 trees!

Q: Am I guaranteed the same level of crackle performance in every candle?
A: The level of crackle performance in your candle cannot be guaranteed. Factors such as wax blend, fragrance type, fragrance load, colour, and container size all affect the levels of crackle and burn performance achieved using our wicks. We recommend purchasing a Sample Kit for your testing to determine wick sizing & type.

Q: Is wick testing still required?
A: Yes. You must test all wicks, including wooden wicks, before making large batches of candles.

Q: What is contained in the sample packs?
A: We offer a sample pack in all three Lumetique Original ranges (0.508, 0.762, and 1.016) which contain two of each wick in the range along with accompanying sustainers. Perfect for testing!

Q: What information do I need to include on candles made with wooden wicks?
A: If you make candles for re-sale, it is required that you label your packaging acknowledging the patents of this wick with “www.lumetique.com/patents.” Other requirements, such as CLP, also still apply.

Golden Wax Comparison: Which soy wax should I choose?

We are often asked questions such as ‘what is the difference between the Golden Waxes?’ and ‘which soy wax should I use?’ To help make this easier, we have put together a handy wax comparison chart for the Golden Wax 494, Golden Wax 464, and Golden Wax 444: The Similarities All three of the Golden Waxes are manufactured by AAK. They are natural, kosher, vegan and cruelty free. The most suitable dye to use with natural soy wax is the Inpex SD Dye . Additionally, all three waxes have very similar fragrance loads (10-11%) and offer fantastic cold and hot throw when used alongside Escentscia Prime Range and Style Range fragrance oils. The Differences When choosing which soy wax to use, you need to first consider the type of candle you will be making. For wax melts and small moulded candles, you need a wax which contracts as it cools to allow mould release and therefore the Golden Wax 494 is most suitable. Please note that the Golden Wax 494 is not suitable for pillar candles.   For soy

Candle Making Guide: How to prime raw candle wick

All wicks should be coated in wax before they are used. We offer pre-waxed candle wicks here for customers who prefer the convenience, but we also offer raw candle wick here for customers who enjoy priming their own wicks. Raw wick is unwaxed cotton wick. It is supplied in string-like format and is wound onto a cardboard bobbin. A step-by-step guide to priming your own wicks can be found below: Cut the required length of wick off the cardboard spool which it is supplied on.  Dip the wick into the melted wax and keep the wick in the melted wax until you see air bubbles rise to the surface. This generally takes a few seconds.  When this happens, it means that the wick has absorbed a sufficient amount of wax and the wick can now be removed from the wax. Run your fingers along the wick to remove any extra air bubbles and then lay flat on a hard surface. Once this has dried, we recommend repeating this procedure twice, but please note when doing the 2nd and 3rd layer you only need to dip
